Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common – in some cases genetic – birth defects in humans. There are geographical variations in the frequency of the defect. India belongs to the regions which are particularly hard hit.
In 2009, Daimler AG donated EUR 50,000 to the charitable organization Deutsche Cleft-Kinder-Hilfe e.V. One of its nine cleft lip and palate centers in India is in Mumbai. The association’s newly built hospital went fully operational in 2009, since when it has operated on around 20 patients a month – mostly children – under state-of-the-art medical conditions with the aim of correcting their birth defects through surgery to the greatest extent possible.
